A Pennsylvania Mining Town Moves Beyond Toxic History Palmerton, a small town in eastern Pennsylvania’s coal region just miles from lehigh valley, had its beginnings largely as a company town.  The town actually was named after Stephen Palmer, once head of the company. In fact, it was incorporated in 1912 around the area’s growing zinc mining industry, which began in 1898. For many years, the New Jersey Zinc Company was the largest U.S. producer of zinc, which is used to make brass and construction materials.

But this company left more than just a name imprinted on this part of Pennsylvania. It also left a toxic environmental legacy on the people and the landscape. As a result of the industrial activities that took place in Palmerton for more than 80 years, the town was left with an enormous smelting residue pile called the “Cinder Bank.” The Cinder Bank is what is left of the 33 million tons of slag (rocky waste) left by the New Jersey Zinc Company as a byproduct of their mining operations.

These activities killed off vegetation on 2,000 acres of Blue Mountain and allowed contaminants to flow into the Aquashicola Creek and Lehigh River also effecting Lehigh Valley. According to the EPA, children in this area tested over the years showed elevated levels of lead in their blood. Horses, cattle, and fish were also shown to contain contaminants.

Lehigh Valley PA Oil Spill CleanUpAllentown fire crews have contained the area where they believe oil is leaking into the Lehigh River, officials said Saturday evening October 8, 2016

The environmental problem seemed to be oil leaking from the area of the construction site on Route 22 that crosses the Lehigh River just north of Allentown, said Peter McAllister, assistant operations officer for the Allentown Fire Department’s hazardous materials team.

Crews have surrounded the area with booms that they plan to leave in place overnight, McAllister said. The hazmat team will reassess the situation in the morning, and whomever is determined to be at fault for the leak will be responsible for cleaning it up, he said. Officials first responded to the oil spill around 3 p.m. Saturday when an oily sheen was spotted on the Lehigh River. Police tracked the sheen northward along the river’s shore toward Catasauqua. When they were unable to find the source, the hazmat clean up team was called in to use its boat to search for the leak on the river. The hazmat team put the booms in place to contain as much of the spill as possible. Historic Of Area

The Lehigh Valley is named after the Lehigh River, which runs through it, and owes much of its development and history to the anthracite materials, lumber, and ores which poured down the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company’s (LC&N) Lehigh Canal and railways LC&N constructed or encouraged parallel to it. The pollution free upper drainage basin shares or features  almost half the southeastern Coal Region, which have the richest anthracite deposits on the planet, while the lower valley holds valuable limestone, sandstone, and clay deposits. In the charter of March 20, 1818 for the Lehigh Navigation Company, virtual total control was given by the legislature to the Canal Company which it kept until 1964. These transportation improvements conquered the nation’s first energy crises due to deforestation in the early 19th century. The Canal worked into the Great Depression, feeding ports down and up the Delaware Canal, the Delaware River, and transoceanic demand, and was integral to the regional industrial revolution in the greater Philadelphia-Trenton-Wilmington area.
